Well these are the actual WORDS OF GOD in the Bible, so they carry some weight.
Too bad he didn't some up with more useful comments regarding racism, slavery, environmentalism, etc. Seems to me he picked out some pretty trivial subjects to include in his top ten list.

The relevance of the Ten Commandments is that we humans cannot follow them perfectly and in a consistant manner. The Ten Commandments convict us of sins we have committed and let us acknowledge our profound need for God our Savior.

if you think about it, they are relevant to everyone's life! they are basic moral laws. don't steal, don't lie in court, don't covet another man's wife, respect your parents, don't kill, don't commit adultary...
they are relevant for EVERYONE in EVERY aspect of thier life!
