There could be a number of reasons that a person acts rude or nasty. It may be that they just don't know any better. It may be that they are very selfish and could care less about the effect of their actions may be harmful to or unaccepted by others. Or, it may be that the person is just lacking the valuable art of tact and just speaks his or her mind straight from the tip of the tongue and not from the brain after thinking about what they are going to say before they say it. But, most likely if you are talking about a sister-in-law, the nasty attitude is probably a product of jealousy. The only advice I can give is to not let the other person's rudeness allow you to put yourself on their nasty level. Stay true to yourself and who you are.

most of them do it because they think they are better than anyone else. It isn't just sisters-in-law. It can be anybody. Here this past year I have ran into a lot of nasty, mean people. People with money are the worst because they look down on poorer people. I don't have a lot of money and I am always nice to people. I am no better or no worse than anybody else.

That has not been my experience. However, I would say people who are rude and nasty are either with the delusional idea of entitlement or they are really miserable and hate filled human beings. God bless****

Because they're pathetic and generally have a lot of their own problems so tend to take it out on others to make everyone else's life a misery too..sad and selfish people generally

Because they feel threatened usually. They have probably devloped this behaviour as children & it resurfaces as adults. In-laws are particularly bad as they are very aware that your relationship to their husband (or wife or whatever) goes back much further than their own.

Jealousy, insecurity most likely. Keep your dignity, don't rise to it. Concentrate on the family members who are good to you
