I would like to point out that the Catholic faith is the largest religion and Christian denomination in the world because of divne providence. Acts tells us that every day they (the apostles) added to their number those being saved.

In regards to your question as to why others break off and start their own religion there are numerous reasons.

In 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 the Bible speaks about the coming of “The Wicked One” or the Anti-Christ. It refers that “deceit” will be used as his source of power and says:

3 Do not let anyone deceive you in any way.... 9 The Wicked One will come with the power of Satan 10 and use every kind of wicked deceit on those who will perish. They will perish because they did not welcome and love the truth so as to be saved. 11 And so God sends the power of error to work in them so that they believe what is false. (Emphasis added) 12 The result is that all who have not believed the truth, but have taken pleasure in sin, will be condemned. (St. Jerome Catholic Study Bible)

So error (erroneous ideas) is what leads anyone and even whole societies into doing things they should or should not do. If Satan can not subdue a persons will into disobeying God, he resorts to trying to deceive a person into believing something that is false. Even Jesus Christ was tempted by Satan quoting scripture, but Jesus saw through Satan’s deceitful fallacies. How many times then has Satan used scripture to deceive others?

A SUMMARY ON THE PROMINENCE OF ST. PETER THE APOSTLE:
Taken from Encyclopaedia Britannica

The Synoptic Gospels agree that Peter served as spokesman, the outstanding member of the group, and enjoyed a certain precedence over the other disciples. For example:
•Whenever the disciples are listed, Peter is mentioned first (Mt 10:2-4; Mk 3:16-19; Lk 6:14-16; Acts 1:13; cf. Only Gal 2:9).
•Those not belonging to the immediate followers of Jesus also recognized the authority of Peter, (Mt 17:24)
•Sought clarification from Jesus on behalf of the disciples (Mt 15:15)
•Peter is mentioned by name while others are indicated as merely accompanying him (Mk 1:36; Lk 8:45)
•Even when the three disciples closest to Jesus (the “pillars” -- Peter, James, and John) figure in a particular incident, it is frequently Peter alone who is named. When the three are named, Peter’s name appears first (Mt 17:1, 26:37).
•Peter was charged by Jesus (Luke 22:31, 32), effected the strengthening of others.
•The fact that Peter is emphasized in John and charged by Jesus to “tend my sheep” and “feed my lambs” (Jn 21:15,16) at the same time the role of the disciples as a whole is being de-emphasized attests to the prestige of Peter in the apostolic church.
IT WAS PETER WHO:
•confessed the Sonship of Jesus (Mt 16:16)
•was commissioned to “lend strength” to his brothers (Luke 22:32)
•on the Morning of the resurrection “ran to the tomb” (Luke 24:12) -- that the Resurrected Christ first appeared.
•who’s priority as a witness to the Resurrection is found in the letters of Paul (I Cor 15:5)
•presided over the appointment of Matthias as an Apostle (Acts 1:23-26)
•first “raised his voice” and preached at Pentecost, the day when the church came into being (Acts 1:14-39)
•exercised the role of judge in the disciplining of those who erred within the church (Acts 5:1-10).
•led the Twelve Apostles in extending the church “here and there among them all” (Acts 9:32)
•walked on water towards Jesus. (Mt 14:28-33)
•witnessed and spoke at the transfiguration of Jesus. (Mt 17:1-8 & 2 P 1:16-18)
•at the Garden of Gethsemane. (Mt 26:37)

JESUS SAID TO PETER:
1.Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. (Mt 16:17-19)
2.For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
3.And so I say to you, you are Peter,
4.and upon this rock I will build my church,
5.and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
6.I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
7.Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
8. “tend my sheep” and “feed my lambs” (Jn 21:15 & 16)
What significance and in what context are these statements made?

THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST IS...
1.Entrusted to the Disciples having the Teaching Authority of His Church (Mt 28:19). Jesus commanded the eleven disciples to “...teach ye all nations.” The body of the church (the faithful believers) do not have this authority.
2.
3.Paul is amazed at how his converts are deserting the gospel of Christ for a perverted message: “I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by [the] grace [of Christ] for a different gospel (not that there is another). But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach [to you] a gospel other than the one that we preached to you, let that one be accursed! (Gal 1:6) See MAGISTERIUM.
4.The faithful (those who believe in Jesus Christ especially present in the Blessed Sacrament) “And not for them (the Apostles) do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me.” (Jn 17:20)
5.Born on the day of PENTECOST: when the Holy Spirit descended upon Mary and the Apostles.
6.“Pillar and Foundation of Truth” (1 Tim 3:15). Paul says, “...you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.
7.Holy and Pure. “Christ also loved the church and delivered Himself up for it: That He might sanctify it... That He might present it to Himself, a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” (Eph 5:25-26)

On December 8, 1864, Pope Pius IX published The Syllabus of Errors. In short he was condemning “liberalism.” The popes' condemnation and concern about “liberalism” is a valid one. The following distinction about “liberalism” is made in a religious context:

Liberalism is the dogmatic affirmation of the absolute independence of the individual and of the social reason. Catholicity is the dogma of the absolute subjection of the individual and of the social order to the revealed law of God. (28)

In this context every person and society conforms themselves to God’s will or defies it. This statement is also saying that the Catholic Church is the only one true Church of Christ. It is interesting that most people will acknowledge that Christ did institute His Church on earth and yet can not trace the divine authority as can be done in the Catholic Church. This is exactly what was done to prove Jesus was “Christ” in the Gospel of Matthew and Luke. If we are to free ourselves from Satan’s attitude, “I will not serve.” then we must do the will of God.

Are there people claiming to preach the Gospel who actually pervert it? Yes, Ga 1:6-8 Paul says some converts pervert the gospel: I am surprised at you! In no time at all you are deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ, and are accepting another gospel. Actually, there is no “other gospel,” but I say this because there are some people who are upsetting you and trying to change the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel that is different from the one we preached to you may he be condemned to hell! PERTAINING TO MORMONS WHO PREACH ANOTHER GOSPEL!!! Know the meaning of MAGISTERIUM
1 Jn 4:1,2.
Are there “Christian” Churches, by self-proclaimed authority, that are of human origin? Yes, see encyclopedia for answer of the specific denomination. Gal 1:11-12 Christ’s church is not of human origin but has Divine Authority. Paul said, “The gospel which was preached by me [an apostle] is not according to man. For neither did I receive it of man: but did I learn it by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Peter is not the founder of the Catholic Church. Christ Himself is the founder. Peter was the first Vicar of Christ, the first human representative of Christ and temporal head of His Church, appointed by Christ Himself. Jesus, speaking directly to the Apostle Simon, said "Thou [note - "Thou", not "your profession of faith"] art Rock, and upon this Rock I will build my Church". The Rock upon which Christ built His Church still stands firm today, teaching and worshipping in constant, unchanging unity and truth, in accord with the stated will of Christ, "that they all may be ONE, even as you Father and I are ONE". How different this is from manmade churches not built upon the Rock, a brief history of constant division, fragmentation, and doctrinal chaos, exactly the opposite of Christ's stated will. Thank God for His Church, and the Rock upon which it was built, blessed Simon Peter, Simon the Rock, and his divinely appointed successors.

Internal arguments between Luther a Dominican Priest and the Pope were the cause of the reformation, recently I heard a protestant say that Jesus actually pointed to a piece of rock beside Him and said on this rock I will build My church, the mind boggles.

Not everyone thinks the rock to whom Jesus was referring is the Catholic church since the apostles had early day church and I don't remember reading about the pope being there. Also the fact that Christ's death made it possible for us to pray directly to God didn't include the Pope. No offense. If people want to confess to the Pope, that's is their right.

Peter was not the founder of the Roman Catholic church.Peter was the type of man Christ would depend on to keep his church.
Peter who was often weak and sometimes misunderstood what he was taught none the less was devoted to the end. This was the meaning of the statement.

People breakaway from religions or even countries when they don't want to abide by the existing doctrines. Consider King Henry the VIII who protested the Catholic doctrine of no divorces. He formed his own religion that allowed them. By the way, that doesn't make it right. The truth is the truth.

The 'rock' is the truth that Peter revealed, not Peter himself. I don't believe in the Pope's authority on Earth.

Arrogance and pride, just like Lucifer.

Pride. They all think they know more than Jesus who said "and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against her"
