If a nuke was detonated downtown, what would most likely happen to people on the outskirts of town? Would they feel the blast, and how long until they experienced things like radiation poisoning?

Anyone within 2 miles of the blast will be killed instantly. The cloud from the bomb will likely form clouds and the radiation can carry up to 70 miles away from the explosion and fall on other cities as rain (obviously poisoned). Some start to feel the effects of radiation within minutes and some within days.

Dead Dead Dead.
Depending on the size of the bomb, they might be vaporized instantly or might day days later from radiation poisoning. People hundreds of miles away would also feel the effects of this, through the fall out being carried in the atmosphere and the radiation getting into the water system being carried downstream.
Get a map. Look at Ohio. Im in Dayton. Set off a nuke in Columbus which is 60 miles away from me and i would be leaving my town. I woudnt stick around...much too close.

It would be devasting for an area of around 35nm around the target area for a 10MT bomb. An airburst would be more devasting than a ground burst.

People inside the 5nm blast zone would die instantly, blast would inflict heavy loss of life for an area of around 13-17nm from the center. Further injury would be from 17-35 nautical miles out.

Check out link below for some information.

Hundreds of thousand if not millions would die in 2 days to about 30 years after the blast. The area about 50 nm around the blast and other fallout zones would be uninhabitaly for about 600 years.

Best source for nuclear devastion is Chornobyl.

Radiation poisoning will kill most of the surviors within weeks. Even those in underground shelter will perish, after their supplies run out, because the area where the bomb exploaded will be radioactive for at least 100 years.. This is what you have to look forward to in case a nuclear war happens. It is a lose lose situation for mankind.

It depends on the size of the bomb you're talking about, and the size of the "mid-size city", but I believe, if you use the term "downtown", meaning a city big enough to have a "central business district", and considering the number of possible options of the nuclear weapons nowadays, you'd probably see a "nuclear desert" subsequent to the explosion, something similar to nagasaki or hiroshima, no matter what the size of the city. God Bless you.

The entire city would be gone. People would feel the shockwaves from a hundred miles away, or more.

It soley depends on the size of the explosion and its system of delivery. Here's an online "Bomb-A-City" calculator that shows you the effects.

Depends on how many kilo or mega tons were used, was it air burst or ground burst. As for radiation effects would be felt for centuries.
