If you want to make windows media player the default player for .mp3 files do the following
Open up windows explorer
Go to Tools->Folder options
Then click on file types tab
In the list below find the extension MP3, click on this and in the bottom section it should have a change button, click on this and select Windows media player, and ensure the Always use this program is ticked
Click ok till you're all the way out and that should do it

This is a quick fix, iTunes took over all of my media as well when I downloaded it for my iPod. Anyways, you open up your start menu, and there should be an icon on the left called "Set Program Access and Defaults". Click this, and a new window opens. There should be 3 choices in the window, and bubble "Custom" should be chosen. Click the word "Custom" and the selection expands. The third option down is the media player setting. Choose the bubble next to "Windows Media Player" and OK. This should fix the problem.

Right click a music file and select 'open with' then 'choose program'. Select Windows Media Player and then check the 'always use the selected program to open this type of file' box. :) Good luck!
