You should teach him. Just tell him to watch you do it.

It takes patience. One of my grandsons was about 12 before he learned. It was his little 5 year old sister that taught him. She was not critical, didn't make fun, just wanted to help her brother. Sadly, all the adults around him tended to lose patience and be critical.

Tying knots is something that after you know how, it's so easy. But initially learning how is painful. Help you little brother by being totally patient. Teach him on your tennis shoes. They will have big strings making it easier to manipulate. Don't have the shoes on, just sitting on a table. Place the heal of the shoe closest to your brother - in the same direction as if he were tying his own shoes. Calmly demonstrate and encourage.

Just to give yourself an idea of the difficulty, try learning all 17 ways Ian ties his shoes:

It's not easy learning a new thing, and sometimes frustration kills the desire. Be encouraging and patient.

The mere fact that your brother cannot tie his shoes is an indication to the fact that the primary caregivers aren't patient enough to teach him what he needs. Your brother can learn to tie his shoes in one visit with you simply by watching you especially with chocolate sitting there enticing him. (Seen it happen) This could be a serious problem for your brother later in life. He could eventually be mislabeled "slow" when he isn't. Although you may be quite busy with your life it means alot that you are still attentive to this problem. If you can- take up more time with him and find out if there are any other things that you could help your baby brother to learn. I believe that his mother may be thankful or not mind. Remember..."It takes a village". Take some time with him and you will find that he will become more inquisitive and want to become like you and therefore report his accomplishments to you because you seem to genuinely care in his eyes. You already have me convinced. Become his hero and remember, he's YOUR brother so you have that privilege.

He's only eight. They don't teach that anymore because developmentally it's not important in the era of velcro and slip-on crocs.

Why does it bug you? Are you the official shoe tie-er when he's over?

Serious answer, ask yourself if it matters because you think he'll suffer, or if it bugs you because you are comparing the expectations between him and you? He'll learn to tie them when it is important to him. If he asks you to teach him, then teach him the way they taught you in kindergarten. Start with the number one step, crossing over. Or start with the last step, do all of it, then help him do the tightening. That is a very common way to teach children, it's called derived manding. You can google to learn more.

My little brother is 8 and he doesn't know how to tie his shoes. You should tell your dad and he will talk with your brother. He needs to learn how to ties his shoes. Make it into a game and make up a song or a gimmerick to get his attention. My litle brother likes me to make up the bunny song where I take the laces and refer to them as bunny ears. Then, I explained to him the whole process. He is learning so I think it works. Unfortunately, they have stopped teaching kids how to tie their shoes in schools. I don't know why. Just do that and I think he will learn how to tie his shoes.

Well now in kindergarten they are to busy teaching them spanish and probably computers and advanced math lol. little children are expected unfortunetly now to know all these things before they even enter school. i believe they have to know how to count to a certain number and say their abc's and of course tie there shoes. and they have to be able to pull there pants up and wipe and all that because teachers are not allowed to help them in the bathroom anymore.anyways at 8 he should catch on quick, teach him the bunny ears.

Schools around the world these days are afraid to actually teach kids anything, but that aside, I'd say eight is too late for bunny ears and the such, you're just going to have to show the kid how you do it and then let him try until it's right

Well he is eight so he should be able to understand your directions much easier than in kindergarten. So why don't you just set aside some time were you can talk him through tieing his shoes yourself. All he needs is instructions, he is eight I'm sure he will catch on quickly.

I have a 13 year old who still can't tie them that well. I think it has something to do with fine motor skills. Isn't this why velcro shoes were invented? Don't worry, he will learn.
