My dog, a 2 yr. old german shepherd, has run into things in the dark. He also is very scared while riding in the car at night. When meeting traffic, he hides from the headlights. Does the light hurt his eyes or can he just not tell what it is?

No, healthy dogs should have excellent night vision. My dog has.
If your dog has problems seeing at night, take him to a vet- he could get hurt if it's not treated

Dogs have a lot better vision than humans. Dogs can see the BEST at twilight. Try keeping a light on in your car when riding with him. The oncoming cars' lights might hurt his eyes, but he also does not know what it is.
