It can be very tricky to diagnose sometimes because many people can be depressed without showing signs of being manic. Some people who are bipolar often stay depressed for longer periods of time and when they are in the so-called 'high' phase, they appear agitated and anxious. It's different for everyone. I would seek a second opinion to be certain because the medications that they would need to treat the patient with are serious ones, but they are necessary. Bipolar disease is a very serious illness with a strong physical cause, not just a mental disorder and if untreated, can lead to total incapacity and even death. If treated properly with therapy and medication, the sufferer can recover fully and lead a full, happy life.

Yes it can, because there are no lab tests for bi-polar disorder. You should have many different interviews with a psychiatrist and physician, along with toxicology screening. Many times emotional fluctuation can be from a thyroid disorder, so that should be checked also.

I could talk about symptoms, but you should do that yourself. Study extensively, get every piece of information you can find, start by just typing it into a search engine. Good luck, and don't worry if you or someone you know has a bi-polar disorder it is manageable through medication and you can and will live a very happy, normal life.

Yes. It takes a qualified physician to make an accurate diagnosis. A psychiatrist is usually the best one. Probably the most difficult determination is between unipolar depression and bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. A number of physical disorders can cause significant mood symptoms. A complete physical exam is needed to rule out those disorders.

Oh yes. Schizophrenia and bipolar are often misdiagnosed (the differential diagnosis can be difficult). Also, there are varying degrees of bipolar: bipolar I, II, and cyclothymia, which can be misdiagnosed without careful inventory of severity and timing. The treatments are different, so it is important to get the right diagnosis.

Yes. Bipolar I is rarely misdiagnosed because manic episodes are quite dramatic, but bipolar II is characterized by periods of depression and hypomania, which can easily be misdiagnosed. Bipolar II patients often consider hypomania their normal state and don't report it to their doctor, resulting in a diagnosis of unipolar depression. Other times, doctors will think that a patient is describing hypomania, when it's actually their normal state, resulting in a diagnosis of bipolar depression II for a patient with unipolar depression.
