The M60 is a SAW (squad automatic wepon) that was used by the Marine Corps. It fires a belt fed 7.62x39 ammunition. The M60 is being fased out by the M249 SAW that fires the 5.56x45 (same as M16/M4). The M60 has been around since Vietnam.

You need to give more information because there are multiple things using that designation.
One type of M60 is the general purpose machine gun that fired belt fed 7.62mm ammo that was mentioned.
A second type was the MBT (main battle tank) that was replaced by the M1 Abrams tank. The later versions even had the same on the move targeting system that the M1 has.
Other services besides the Army may have used the designation for their own weapons. Other armies besides the US could also have done so.

The M60 was the standard general-purpose machine gun of the US in the Vietnam era, and is still in limited use. It was based more or less on the German design MG 34. Note that the old "ma deuce" heavy is still going strong.

The M-60 is a light machine gun you would have seen it in the Rambo movies. It's the black machine gun that is belt feed Rambo wears the ammo wrapped around his arm. This weapon was used in the 1960's up until recently replaced by a %.56mm weapon. The M-60 uses 7.62mm ammo.

it's a section support machine gun from the late 1950's. The ammo it's use is the standard NATO 7.62 mm and can been seen in almost every Vietnam movie
