Just be honest with him as to why you did not get him one. But the best gift to give him is unconditional love, support, and care for his drive and aspirations for his life. Material things are just that and really mean nothing in the grand scheme of things and people need to stop focusing so much on them to define their love in a relationship.

I just pay attention. I noticed my guy doesn't have a watch so I got him one and he loved it that I noticed the small stuff.
A bracelet because when he looks at his wrist he will always think of you.
What does he like? My guy likes basketball so I will get him something to do with that.
