Two thing in particular come to mind...
1. beginning of a new century/millenium. Happens every century.. people tend to be awestruck by those 00's
2. Y2K... not only the end of a century, not just the end of the millenium, but now had a bunch of old computer programs that were in charge of nuclear missles and electirical grids and VCRs with dates in them that only understood year 00 to year 99. What would happen when we entered 2000???!!! would we go back in time to 1900? Would buggies replace cars? ...well, you know
what (didn't) happen next.

Peace

Around that time, someone told me that the Bible says that something significant happens every 2000 years. That was why they suspected that the world would end in that year.

Cus they couldn't believe that computers could cope with all the zeros in 2000 and so they'd explode and cause chaos everywhere meaning people would all die and the world would then explode.

First of all, you cannot give collective guilt to everyone.

I know i didnt feel the world was going to end in 2000, simply because of my religious beliefs. The signs of the day of judgment had not occurred...(athiests and non-abrahamic faith peeps out there; dont take that offensively please)

Ok, ill admit that i believed that computers and banks were gonna self-destruct and go dead and crazy, but i refused to believe that the world was going to end.

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME POINTS BRO/SIS!

just the fact that they thought God was for some reason using our silly method of measuring time and would pick a simple time like 1000 years after his son was here.
this has happened for many many years each turn of the century some people think that is it .

the numbers had a nice ring. the same happened around 1000 a.d. now there's hoopla over 2012 being the same. there maybe cataclysms in our future but i wouldn't get worked up over a man-made time line.
