well i dont know if its just my dog or if i trained it well but my dog can sit, stay, roll over, play dead, stand, speak, find(u hide somewhere and he finds you), dont touch(u put food infront of him and say stay...and he doesnt eat it), and he can sneeze on command. So using treats and praise is a big part of it. and if ur trying to teach your dog something like sit, push his butt lightly down so hes siting and praise him for doing that. Or use hand signals. Say for roll over move your hand in a circle. But sometimes even showing your dog works. Like my dog,Harley, sometimes get confused between speak and sneeze, so me either make a barking sound or a sneezing sound to show him what we mean...
My dog is a mixed breed.

Reward-based training is great for this. Check out Karen Pryor's website, she's the queen of clicker training. You'll get lots of ideas here:

Remember - dogs don't speak English, so don't try to train your dog by chanting "roll over....roll over..." while the dog sits there and stares at you, wondering why you're not handing over the treats. Karen's books and articles will teach you how to teach your dog the tricks effectively, so that he understands what you mean and can perform the tricks anywhere.
