this problem is more than likely not the drivers but the actual settings for your card within the computer
i presume that as its a fx5500 then its a agp card,so the 1st thing you should do is go into set up(press delete at start up) and then into either bios settings or intergrated pheripals, and you should be looking for agp settings, then you should set it to agp x 4,if its allready set at x 4 then set it to x 8,the point being it is probally the agp x setting that is causing the shutdown
this seems to be a common problem lately with the nvidia forceware drivers as the drivers are geared towards the pci-express interface and the agp interface is now being phased out slowly
there are a few other settings in bios that you should try altering such as the shared memory amount if you have intergrated graphics(this should be set as low as possible) and there is a setting which denotes what bus the graphic boots from(pci or agp)you need to pick agp,
also check the securing clip is fully shut on the agp card and that any gpu fans on the card are free of dust
you may use a older version of the nvidia forceware driver as your card is not a new generation card, but still a good card,i have allways rated the nvidia fx series as a good all round budget card with good pixel and shader qualitys(model 2.0)
another excellent budget card is the ge-force 6200,i use this on my 2nd machine and for £39 you get 256mb of ddr ram and pixel and shader model 3.0,i have got 70 frames per second on doom3 at resolution of 1024 x 768,for the price you wont get much better
anyway here is a link for the latest forcewre drivers if you need them.........http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_2k_93.71_uk.html
any problems mate let me know
happy xmas

The fan isn't a huge take care of those playing cards, they don't make sufficient warmth on them. The 5500 often is the more beneficial card with 256MB Video memory. i recommend getting a larger power furnish like 450W then you extremely can get a Geforce 7 card.

Was the card completely seated in the slot?

try to remove then put it back again...or maybe the video card is not compatible with your system.,
