Shedding can be a sign that something is going on that is not so readily apparent. Some of the things that cause shedding are:
1. Flea/lice infestations
2. Poor diet
3. Bad nerves
4. needs bathing and brushing.
This is not an insclusive list by no means! But if your cat is shedding badly you might want to check out the things I suggested might be causing the problem.

Even if your cat is shorthaired, an occasional brushing can be a pleasant experience if done right. I brush my shorthaired cat about once a week, and bathe her when needed (about once every two months). She is an indoor cat so she does not get dirty often. I brush my longhaired cat about 3 or 4 times a week, and he is just a baby but he is stinky so it is time for his first bath!

A shorthaired cat can be brushed with a short bristled straight brush. But for a longhaired cat I reccommend a "bent L" brush. When brushing a longhaired cat, be aware of how much pulling you are doing, you don't want to make it painful or unpleasant for your pet. Starting from the tail tip, pull back all the fur except about an inch or two and brush that, then move up to the next one or two inches and brush that. In other words, work from the bottom up.

Of course, you could take your cat to a groomer, but doing it yourself not only helps to bond you to your pet in a special way, but also you will get to know your pet's body well so that if there are any changes you can let the vet know right away. Besides, handling your cat this way also means the cat will less likely be a behavioral problem also.

If this does not help the shedding, you might want to discuss this with your vet. Usually, a good grade dry catfood product along with perhaps a vitamin supplement might help as well.

Enjoy your cat!

Some breeds will shed more than others. And for some, it will be more noticeable because of the length of their hairs or the color of your furniture.

You should be brushing your cat on a regular basis. That alone will reduce a lot of hair being left all over. If your house is excessively warm, it's natural for a cat to shed more. If the cat is sick it will shed more as well.

Oddly enough, light from the TV will make your cat shed more. So if you are one of those people who fall asleep with the TV on start shutting it off or get a timer.

Brush it daily. If you cannot, take him to a groomer once or twice a month. If it is a long haired cat, you can shave them during warmer weather (they actually like it). There are also self-grooming things you can buy at pet stores - boards for the floor or the wall that will trap ecess fur when they rub against it.

I saw on an informercial a glove/brush thing that was supposed to help remove the extra fur before it sheds completely.

Are you sure your cat does not have some kind of medical disorder that is causing to shed. You should run some blood test that should clear up any questions.

Its just normal. Get a glove brush (fits over you hand, but brushes) and every time you go to pet you put on the glove, the constant grooming will capture most of the hair.
