Well, to each his own etc.. but I always liked koh Chang.. mostly because you could essentially walk out oyur hotel door and not leave the beach.. there were bamboo huts selling everything... of course, if you want seclusion, you might try some of the coastline along the Gulf - south of the tourist areas..

I would say Phuket because it in itself is very self-sufficient. Use Phuket as a base to get to the other gorgeous islands like Koh Phi Phi, Koh Khai, Koh Racha, Coral Island and of course the Similan islands where it's beautiful for diving.

After doing some island hopping, come back to Phuket to enjoy the amenities, the convenience of the shops....

In Phuket you really get it all, the quiet getaway, the shopping galore, the food indulgence, the night's excitement. It's less sleazy than Pattaya, and more convenient than Samui to get to and to get around. And again, it's the best way to start the island hopping around Phuket.

if this is your first visit, i can suggest to spend sometime in phuket. it is nice during the day and vibrant at night.
take a day tour to surrounding islands like phi phi, krabi, phang nga, etc. that is already 3 separate day trip.
beach hopping around the phukets, watch sunset, enjoy superb thai food at night, party til down if you must.
it is a good base for full activities since infrastructures are all in place. you can fly direct from several countries, ferry and speedboat can be easily arranged, day tours, night life.
more quieter area may be koh samui on the other side of thailand. some said it is phuket several years ago.
go ahead and take the plunge...

The islands offer their own unique beauty. It is more a question of what you want to do on the island. Whether you want to be with crowd, like in Phuket. Lots of privacy like in Koh Phi Phi. Off the beaten track to Koh Chang. Do a beach bum, any beach resorts around will do. So what interest you? What I like may not suit you.

Having been to Koh Samui on a couple of ocassions I would say this Island is the best as its more down to earth cheap
accomadation is far easier to come by and theres plenty to do in the evening, the beaches are fantastic and the people very friendly.

Hong Island is my personal favorite. Its like Phi Phi but with a lagoon. Great snorkling you don't even need your face mask. Just walk in waste high and look at all the fish swimming around you.
