It is the most common way, though USB 2.0 is emerging as a method as well. The main thing to be sure of is that whatever transfer method you choose is supported by your camera!
"Firewire" is Apple Computer's brand name for the IEEE 1394 standard. You need a Firewire/IEEE 1394 adapter board for your computer. They are quite inexpensive these days. I see them advertised at almost any Internet computer store for around $25.00 US (or even less).

Depends on how old your camcorder is. If its over 3 or 4 years old, your probably gonna need firewire. If not, usb 2.0 will work on some newer ones. However, firewire is probably going to give you the best quality and reliability when transferring video due to its high sustained data transfer rate, which although lower than USB 2.0's max rate, is still a faster rate on average. If you want to use firewire and dont have a port, just buy a PCI firewire adapter card, and of course, a cable as well. Hope this helps!

You can use USB if your computer doesn't support firewire. Check what your CAMERA has as well, though. If you don't have either of those there are other cables you can attach, but it will be slow.
