Santa Claus's name is probably morphed from St. Nicholas through the Slavic pronunciation of his name, sint ni-klas. I believe that over time this may have morphed into the English Santa Claus. I guess this means that Santa's "north pole" legends aren't true, but saint Nicholas was still a great man, a true embodiment of the christmas spirit.

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

Santa is not real.
He is the reflection of the god Odin. Also known as Wodan, Wogdan, Wodin, etc.
The early catholic church let converts keep their pagan rites but gave them some sort of christian tie.
This made it easier to convert them, but a procedure against scripture.
The christian tie in this case would be a early catholic leader called Nicholas that was actually generous.
Scripture is clear about leaving false worship when you become a christian. The early church turned their back on that instruction.

According to history there was a St Nicholas who went about doing good and giving gifts. My objection to Santa Claus is that we ourselves buy the gifts and then lie to our children and say Santa brought them. We also teach them to be good so they will get things and surely all the hustling, bustling, buying, buying, spending money, overeating, going into debt to buy and then telling our children, Santa brought it, trying to pay off the debt before next Christmas is (to me) ludicrous. Many churches have Santa coming in and yelling ho, ho, ho as he walks down the aisles. They are actually in the "house of God" and allowing their children to believe that lie and telling them lies while they sit there. Come on.
