Dogs were not the first animal sent into space.

The first animals sent into space were fruit flies, in July of 1946 aboard a V-2 rocket.

Next was Albert II, a monkey, also fired up in a V-2, on 6/14/1949. Unfortunantly for him, his chute failed and he died on impact.

The fourth flight was a mouse on yet another V-2, on 8/31/1950. It survived however.

It was not til 1/29/1951 when the Soviets launched Tsygan & Dezik.

The Soviet dog Laika was the first shot into orbit though, on 11/3/1957 aboard Sputnik 2. Laika was euthanized, and later the craft burned up in re-entry.

because if humans were sent they would have risk of life . And some stupid mad old scientist thought that dogs would be the perfect animal to die ( even though nothing happened ) in space . and as for animals other than dogs , they cannot be completely trusted but a dog can be trained for what to do.

Because it was easy to train and also it is the most trust able animal in the world. The key persons responsible for sending something in space might be having some dog at their home, that is why it was thought that this animal should be sent.

Training of other animals is difficult so i guess they trained and sent a dog.
It was a female dog as against the male decided on earlier , for the simple reason that she did not have to lift their leg to pee. She was found as a stray wandering the streets of Moscow. Originally named Kudryavka, she was renamed Laika after her breed type. After undergoing training with two other dogs, she was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 and was launched into space on November 3, 1957.

the dog was straying on the road, they lured it in with a bone. if u had stood there, they would have given sumthin else and u wud have become the first animal to be in space. bad luck , never mind, try again.
