You can stay in China as long as you want, you just have to do the necessary paperwork before going, and that is done at the Chinese embassy. The Chinese visa in my opinion, as well as any visa for any country, is just a way to get more money from those applying. Generally, they don't really care why you are going, what you are doing, where you are going to stay, or which places you are going to visit, they just want your money and then they'll put a piece of paper in your passport and away you go. The visa is usually only valid for one entry and a stay of 30 days, unless you specify otherwise. I went to Shanghai to study for 6 weeks and applied for a visa and indicated that I wanted a 60 day single entry VISITOR visa and it was granted to me. Some countries, like Cambodia, which, unfortunately, runs on corruption like no other, will extend your visa once in. China may be the same way--just pay some money, and wa-lah, you can stay in China forever!

You need to apply for a visa to China from the Chinese Embassy. See web site below you will immediately see the link for info on getting a visa. You will also, of course need a U.S. passport. See the second website for info on how to apply for a passport.

The US government will allow you to stay in China until you decide to spy for the Chinese. At that point, you have to leave the country. : )

If you are a White American (even if you cannot speak a word of English) then you can stay forever. If not, then only until the Chinese Government wants you there.

I work here and I'm on a one year, multiple entry visa which doubles as my green card. All you need is someone who is licensed to hire foreigners to sponsor you.
