Because it saves your screen from burn-in.

Due to technological advances, screensavers nowadays are primarily used for entertainment or security purposes.

Keeping the same image on a monitor causes that image to be seen when you go to another site - so a screensaver keeps moving and changing colors - makes your monitor last much longer

As was stated here by others, older CRT (cathode ray tube) style monitors were subject to being "burnt" or having images that were left on the screen for extended amounts of time (think your task bar) being left physically on the monitor display as a result.

As a result you needed some sort of a "protection" to stop these images from becoming residual onto the physical portion of the monitor.

Hence, screen savers came into play.

The funny thing is that now, screen savers are not really needed. Most LCD style monitors are not subject to burn in.

It's to protect the monitor from being etched if left on too long with no activity. You can leave them on, but use a screensaver if you do.

Because, (for example), if you left your computer on with the same picture, (or image), displayed... this image would eventually burn permanently into the phosphorous coating which is on the inside of your monitor's glass surface.
