It could be your internal or external telephone lines. Try connecting another telephone, preferably one that is not wireless. Also call your telephone company to check the lines outside your home. If the crackling occurs on occasion, you may have a problem we have after it rains or snows a lot. The cause of the crackling is the wires located in a box outside of our home are getting wet and will resume back to normal after they dry.

Mine does that, I have to smack it to make it stop, so I'm assuming a lose wire, but for the $10 I'll just go get a new one Tuesday :)
