You do not get baptised into a religeon, you get baptised of your sin. Cleansed is the word they use in the bible.

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

John didn't baptise his followers into any religion.

He baptised his followers into what we now call a "near death experience." He held people underwater until they were close to death. This practice went back 1000's of years as an Eqyptian initiation ritual for the priest hood of Amun (see link below). The Jews brought the knowledge of the ritual with them in the Exodus. Including the use of ritual bathing by the Jewish priests. The initiation rituals for the Temple priest were not written down and are lost.

John saw it as a way of bringing spiritual enlightenment.

If John hadn't been killed, there wouldn't be "Christianity" as created by Paul. We'd have a much more Spiritual religion.

John was a much stronger personality and Jesus would have been one of his followers.

The messenger would not have become confused with the message.

Jesus did the best he could to bring about the enlightenment John was sent to unfold. Jesus' apostles didn't get it. They let Paul, a man who never sat at the feet of Jesus, take control of the movement.

What I find most gaulling about most Christians, especially the (no)fun-damentalists, is they don't realize that what they really practice is "Paulianity."

Jesus came to do 'The Will' of the Father. Jesus said the work the Father had given him was his food.

Jesus was not getting baptized for forgiveness of sins, as he had none.

Now, Jesus followers copy him, as he has become a model to all, asking that his followers imitate him, just as he was doing all the Father had commanded him.

Anyone could speculate on John the Baptist, the different possibilities, if he had lived longer.

As the Lord's prayer says; 'Let your WILL be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven.'

So Baptism is a public sign that people have learned the will of the Father, repented from doing things that were never his will, and commit themselves to follow Jesus.

Adam and Eve failed to live by the will of the Father.

Jesus proved that it is possible for a perfect human to be true to the will of God, proving love, even through the worst circumstances.

Those who love God, the Father will obey him, and trust Him, that his will is the best way to live, all for the glory of God. God is love; 1John4:8.

So, the true 'religion' is to worship .........the Father/the Holy Spirit/JHVH/Jehovah/Almighty God/the Ancient of Days....... with Spirit and Truth, through JESUS only.......as the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship Him, all for his glory.

Anyone who wants to do the will of themselves, God gives the worship to his enemy.
