Most of the people that claim to follow the bible really know very little about it. They don't understand the concept of symbolism, which is what most books of the bible are based on and they don't understand the world in which it was written. It was not made with today's society in mind but was intentionally kept vague so it could apply to many different things.
It is not an exact book. The same book that advises keeping slaves and beating your wife and kids is the same one that tells you to treat all people as equals and love your family.

I believe in the original hebrew text of the old testament (Tanach). No, I cannot fully comprehend some of the subtleties or hidden mystical aspects but I constantly struggle to understand the text at a more tangible level. There are wonderful translations put out there by Artscroll, JPS, and others that are quite helpful if not completely accurate. There are countless volumes of biblical interpretation that can help improve understanding. Sermons are a great way to use textual sources for inspiration and creative ideas. I'm not sure about the Christian communities, but in Judaism, everyone (not only Rabbis) are expected at some point or another to give a sermon based on their level of knowledge. I do not understand Shakespeare the same way that I understand the Tanach because I haven't devoted as much time to it. The Bible's first five books are the word of God, and thus they are the only truly perfect writings we have. The rest of the old testament's books are divinely-inspired, and are thus closer to perfection than any other book. I find reading a work of perfection more fascinating than that of a mere mortal. With that said, great literature has an important place in society and deserves to be treated with a high level of scholarhip and respect as well.

I trust & respect, Father Adams, as a man of sincerity, and deep faith, as he taught from the pulpit.
Also my parents are not stupid, which granted, helps.
So I can comprehend a few things, thank you.
Also Jesus simplified my life by boiling everything down to 2 commandments - even I can comprehend that much.
Peace!

While there are a lot of complex stories in the bible, much of it is very straight forward in terms of the message delivered. You have to look beyond the text for the meaning.

Because it's a life long study of truth, wisdom and knowledge, not a novel. Every time you study it you learn some thing new. Even a chapter you have studied 10 times. Because God's Word is ever lasting. Because the Word is seed sown in the soil of your mind. Because it is the tree of life Jesus Christ, the living Word.

The dumb content of the bible is spoonfed by our parents ....traditionally..... the children are helpless. When they become adults. They carry the ego which the parents has created since the chilhood. .. Jesus is the saviour .. Allah is the great..
