I have a 14 month old chihuahua. She didn't get her first heat until one year of age which was October. For the last week or so I've noticed small amounts of blood on the sheets of my bed (she sleeps with me) and the other dogs are going crazy smelling her, etc. My question is her vulva does not seem swollen nor do I ever notice blood coming out of it. When she was in heat in Oct. there wasn't much blood, but it was noticeable. My question is could she be in heat already? It hasn't been very long since her last heat. Thanks!

It is not a normal heat, there would be at least 4 months between. It sounds like a split heat, the comment about your other dogs going crazy is your biggest clue. They know, they are your best indication. Keep the males away from her and do not breed her this time. Her body is not ready. The split is a sign of immaturity. It is possible that she may be like that her whole life, but it is much more likely it is just the immature reproductive system. Especially since she was over a year for the first heat, definetly wait for the next time around.
The hope would be that she will mature and when she goes into heat next summer it will be a normal one and it would be ok to breed.
As far as this time, keep the boys away and keep her in a diaper. If she is good about cleaning herself you may not see the blood on her. Expect this to run about 3 weeks.

Good luck, happy holidays!

It's possible she's having a "split" heat. Happens sometimes, typically in young females. Usually, no treatment is required and the next heat cycle is usually normal. By the way, this time, she is likely fertile and going to be "standing" for males, so make sure you keep all males away from her.

Get your dog spayed and then you will not have this problem.
