Russet potato, Yukon Gold potato, Caribe potato, and Purple potato are the best for mashing :)
After boiling the peeled potatoes, push them through a potato ricer or a hand cranked food mill into an empty pot.
Put the potatoes in the pot on a low flame and throw in a few tablespoons of butter along with some milk or cream.
Mash up some more with a potato masher over low heat.
Add more liquid and/or butter until you get the taste and consistency you prefer.

Well Russet is what I use but you can get a great result like in countless steak houses with a New Potato or a Red Potato when you leave some skin on and make them a bit lumpy. I like to add garlic to those.
If you use a Russet you can make some AWESOME potatoes by adding sour cream and onions to it and putting it in an oven in a casarole dish and baking it till the top browns. Then they are done since you are going for a brown crust and they are already cooked.
See the best way is to cut 8 lg Russet potatoes in one inch size cubes and boiling them till soft. Then if you can use a mixer you can add a cup of sour cream and a chopped onion and then a teense of pepper and salt and about a stick of butter then mix dump in a casarole dish and bake. MMMMMMMMM That is a family recipe I use and I am a guy too but maybe not clueless LOL. Good Luck she will love the effort.

Peel and cook dinner your potatoes and drain upload a knob of butter and a few milk,s& p to flavor then upload pre cooked beans , peas carrots or different vegeies. NB. in this usa in case you like "bangers and mash" which skill you will get peas or beans and so on on your spuds. a good cook dinner will fold the vegetables into the spud somewhat than basically mashing them in.

Russet or Idaho. Red potatoes are too waxy.
If she doesn't mind instant potatoes go that route. I like the Idaho instant the best. It's fast and simple.

Absolutely any kind will be good - but my favourites as far as taste goes are Yukon Gold or any other kind of yellow-fleshed potato. (Lucky wife, by the way!!)

any kind of potato is good for mashing, as long as you've boiled it long enough. Personally, i like using russet potatoes. make sure you add lots of butter.
