Every time I go back to the doctor for something new they tell me it is my IBS. Now I'm suffering from severe lower spinal pain. I dropped my Health Insurance bc it was so expensive. What's the word from other IBS patients... If I blow the money to go to the doctor will they only tell me this is my IBS again?

For Women who suffer, I'm a day due to my period. The pain started 3 days ago. Like many others my IBS gets worse at this time of the month.

They're starting to recommend that people with IBS, or IBS-like symptoms be tested for celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). A lot of people with celiac were misdiagnosed as having IBS for years. (18 years for me). It takes an average of 11 years for a person with celiac to be diagnosed.

I also had severe lower back and hip pain for three years to the point I could barely walk. It turned out that for me it was gluten-related. They say that in some people it attacks the nerves as well as the digestive system. I've been gluten-free since Jan 06, and I only have pain now when I should have pain. Not this every day torture for no reason that I was living with for those years.

Here's a webpage by the National Institutes of Health on celiac -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/

And another from the Mayo Clinic -

If that starts sounding familiar here are a couple of message boards for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances.

You can also be intolerant to other common foods and get IBS symptoms. Soy, corn, eggs, yeast, dairy, etc. You may want to think about keeping a food/symptoms journal and see if you can identify the culprit(s).

I hope you feel better soon.

I had IBS with constipation as a symptom of hypothyroidism. Once I treated the thyroid problem and started taking fiber, raw apple cider vinegar, and digestive enzymes the IBS went away. I still can't eat Pizza Hut pizza because of the oil they use, but every other place seems fine. Know your tiggers on food and avoid them.
