I have a steak that I took out of the freezer a day ago and won't be able to use it before it has to be thrown out. Is there any harm in cooking it and feeding it to my 2 kittens, or is steak harmful to them? Would it cause them to stop eating their kitten food? Right now, they get Purina ONE kitten dry free fed as well as assorted kitten wet foods twice a day/

There is nothing wrong with the steak; I am going to be eating some of it myself tonight; I just took out way too much by mistake, and will have to toss it.

Even the best foods (and Purina One is one of the best) are processed and stored, so adding fresh foods to their diet can be a very welcome change. Just cut it up in little bitty kitty sized pieces, and don't give them more than a little at a time. I don't know how old your kittens are, but an adult cat shouldn't get more than a teaspoonful. You can freeze the rest in small individual pieces to thaw and give them later. I share my steak (and my chicken, turkey, pork etc) with all my kitties and they love it. They still eat their cat food, because the meat is just a treat from time to time. So give your kittens a very merry Christmas dinner, and they will love it!! Good Luck!!

Why would someone say that Purina One is a good food? It has by-product meat and is 2/3 grain. What's good about that?
Meat is the natural food for a kitten or cat. Many cats cannot handle beef though and I wouldn't try it with the kittens.
I feed a raw meat diet of chicken and turkey and when I made it up with beef that was the only time I had it thrown up.
Grind the extra steak up and saute it with onion and potato for a nice beef hash. That way it won't spoil before you eat it.

Hi there
Well, it depends how young they are but I wouldn't think a small amount would do them any harm, as long as you have cooked it plainly, not adding any salt or marinade or anything, and cut it up quite small for them.
A little treat every so often is great for them and this does sound pretty much like a one-off but beware - they can get used to special stuff very fast and prefer it over their normal food!
I'm speaking from experience because we have four cats, one of whom has to have a special diet due to having digestive problems. It's very nice, and very expensive - Royal Canin Sensitivity Control, duck and rice flavour. One of our other cats absolutely loves it and about once or twice a week he wins, i.e. I give him that rather than his normal food! (I wear a fringe, it is very handy for hiding the word "mug" written on my forehead.)
If we ever win the Lottery, our four will never see a tinny again but will live off fillet steak and sea bass!
Good luck with your little ones and Merry Christmas!

Why don't you cook it and freeze it cooked? I do this all the time so I've got quick meals.
If you feed it to the kittens, it will upset thier tummies and give them nasty poops, which you are likely going to have to clean up.
If you really want to feed it to them, cook it, cut it up into little kitten sized pieces, put it in a ziplock in the freezer and give them only very small amounts at a time.

It depends on how old they are. If over 3-months and you cut it up in tiny pieces for them then sure they can eat it. They will love it, but be ware they may always want it instead of their food. Cut it up into tiny pieces give them a little of it now and freeze the rest in sandwich baggies to that you have some treats for them later. They will love it and it's not bad at all for them as long as they are old enough to eat meats.

I would think that giving kittens steak probably isn't the best idea. Stick with the diet that you have them on... once you start giving them human food/table scrapes, they'll always want it.

Just feed it to them. Their instinct will tell them not to eat it when it might be harmful to them.
It's a pity to feed a good steak to the cats, though.
