When you format a hard drive, some of the space is used to store the main directory and other information that the "formatting" needs to read the hard drive. As you did not list the size of the drive and how you formatted it (FAT32 or NTFS), I can not say for sure, but 8 gig on a drive that is 100g or larger is what you should expect.

Use soft ware like partition magic or partition manager and resize the hard drive make bigger.

I do not think you can get it unless it was encrypted (locked with a password and saved). thats all i know sorry
