My 1997 Ram V6 has a slow shift, and sometimes downshifts while accelerating, causing the engine to rev high, but with little to no increase in speed. Is there a fix? Also, does anybody have any other ideas for improving the performance of this engine? The engine has about 90k, and the truck is in real nice shape (and paid for), so I don’t want to start over.

Thanks
Pat

The engine is fine. Sounds like the throttle control sensor that regulates your transmission.

verify for a vacuum leak, a caught idle air administration valve or a sticking throttle. Vacuum leaks make a hissing noise and are maximum suitable stumbled on with a length of hose held to a minimum of one ear and the different end used as a probe. Pull the air duct off of the throttle physique to verify the throttle and IAC. sure, meaning pulling the "hump" out from between the seats. good luck.

Remove the transmission pan and see if there's excessive friction material and metal shavings in the pan and fluid. If so, plan on getting a new (remanufactured, not rebuilt) transmission installed if your planning on keeping the truck.

If it has never been done, it sounds like your fluid and filter needs changing in your transmission. Have the bands adjusted and flush out all the old fluid.
