Hello

Actually the saying isn't 100% true.
I got a 11 year old dog two years ago from a rescue centre. All he knew was sit and paw. Its IS possible to teach an old dog new tricks but it takes ALOT more time and patience where if it was a youngster. But if your determined to get there, you will.

It took me 5 weeks to teach him to lay down and stay so nothings impossible.

The reason they SAY this is because elderly animals brains work in the same way as elderly people. As we get older our brians slow down and they actually shrink in size. Some parts of our brains die and this is why in alot of elderly people they get short term memory loss. They will be able to tell you everything they did when they were younger, but they may struggle to tell you what they had for lunch today, or what they did an hour ago. I dont personally know if Animals suffer from short term memory loss. However he DID learn 2 new tricks. An older dog will want to spend more time sleeping and resting and may also lose concentration quicker, thats why its more harder but its not impossiable.

It's not ageism it's just a stereotyped observation on human and animal behavior.

Because for many humans as well as animals. The learned behaviour that we are imprinted with when we are young are hard to overcome.

This is why so many children who are abused go on to be abusers.

Children who grow up in violent households are much more likely to be convicted of violent crimes.

Prisoners have a much greateer chance of committing another crime and being reincarcerated that those in the general population.

But of course with enough motivation we can alter our learned behaviour but it is often not easy and the strong motivation to change has to be there.

I suppose you could say that it is, but the older you get the more you are set in your ways, and also depends if the old dog wants to be taught a new trick

It's because dogs are stupid. They'd much rather hang around all day licking their private parts waiting for you to come in so they can share what they've licked off their bottoms with your face.
There is only 1 thing even more irritating and stupid than a dog and that is a dog owner.
Merry Christmas.

Ahh but you can!
I only get older dogs as I have greyhounds. I get them when they retire from racing, anything from 4 years plus but i tend to go for the older dogs (around 6 plus). They come in with very few obedience skills and I have taught them all basics like sit, stay, paw etc. I have only had one who is not playing ball (we have him at the moment!). Ted is 6 and will sit, but not on command yet...he will learn! Peristance pays off :)
Merry Christmas;
