A quart (litre) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (unopened).
1/4 cup of Baking Soda
2 tsp Liquid Soap
Bathe the dog outside or in the bathroom with the door closed and window open ( the smell will linger in your house though).
Combine the ingredients in an open container (it will explode in a closed one).
Using Latex/ plastic GLOVES wash your dog with lukewarm water and the mixture while the mixture is bubbling. Work in the area sprayed and work the mixture well into the fur.
Keep mixture away from dog's face and eyes.
Let the mixture stand for 10 min. or longer before rinsing off.
Repeat if necessary.
Takes out most if not all of the smell
Other's say to bury the dog in some sand and wait 30 min.
Pet store should have something (Skunk Off works too).
If all else fails dab some peppermint on the area to mask the smell. Eventually the smell will disappear but it's something like one or more years. Good luck.

Nature's Miracle has a skunk smell remover. You can pick this up at many pet and feed stores. I always keep two quarts on hand!
Tomato juice actually works, but not as well as the above product, and not so well on furry critters because of the amount of surface area on all that fur. While dealing with the dog, you may have gotten it on you, tomato juice will work well on human skin, you'll have to scrub and use it several times.
My dogs found a skunks den along our hiking trail a few years ago and managed to get skunked about once a week for a whole summer. I gave up trying to de-smell them and just left them outside for the summer.
Best wishes!

Tomato juice is good if you don't have a light colored dog. Tomato juice will turn a lighter color dog a real funny color, which takes forever it to remove.
White vinegar works the best. The ph factor (that is the smell remover) is higher than tomato juice and there is no fear of staining. Plus it's a whole lot less expensive than Tomato Juice.
The person who said douche, was right on target....good for small dogs and to treat facial areas.
Wash your dog first and than apply the vineger and let in soak in (as long as possible and rinse) You can also continue to spot treat by dabbing it on.
The skunk removers sold by petstores are not only costly but not nearly as effective.
The skunk picked a good day to nail your dog......Merry Christmas?

Check PetSmart stores or PetCo. They have a skunk off for your doggie. Otherwise, try tomato juice - and lots of it... do this outside where you can't make a huge mess and really hose down the area when done. The tomato juices (acid) will neatrilze the smell but not hurt your small friend.

Tomato juice will not work. Use the peroxide/baking soda solution. Be careful not to use it on your dogs head. It can hurt the eyes and sinuses. Time is the only answer for the head area. All of those store bought remedies are BS. Just a waste of your money.

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/3 cup baking soda
1 Tablespoon liquid dish soap
Mix ingredients together. The mixture will fizz and may explode
if kept in a closed container, so use it up each time you mix it
and don't try to save the rest. Use a sponge to apply the
solution to your dog, kneading it into his coat; avoid the eyes,
nose, and mouth as you sponge the face gently. Rinse thoroughly
with lots of water. To be effective, this treatment must be
applied within four hours after exposure to the skunk spray.
It works, I have used it (on my dog).
Good luck!
