It is indeed. Developing schizoid tendencies in children should be illegal and forbidden.

The simple answer is "only if that belief is false". I think this is true of any belief. For instance, it is child abuse to teach children the earth is flat, though this may cause less psychological trauma than the added insult you point out. Since the Abrahamic view of god is indeed false (the texts themselves cannot even be reconciled, even within a single tradition), I believe you are correct.

Everything in life depends on how You want to view it. Is it a glass half full or half empty. Would you consider your parents as cruel if they try to teach you how to behave and if you do wrong you will be punished?! It is just the same when parents teach their kids about God. They teach them the Love of God, the reward they will receive if they are good kids, and what will happen if they do wrong. Punishment is the result of wrong doing of that person not what God wants to do. God is not peeping tom, no more than your parents are for watching over you.
you can choose how to look at it. God the ever loving watchful eye to protect you. or, God watching over you to see what wrong you will do to punish you. I chose to see Him as a loving God, not a God that wants to punish me. No, that is not child abuse to tell your kids that there is someone watching over you. Depending on the parents, and how they teach their kids. No all parents teach their kids well.

Peace to ALL

well i see where you're going with this question in some cases the kid is too young to think about and understand the whole concept of religion or god so they don't think much about it but in some cases the kids do understand what's being told to them and it can be seen as a way of scaring the kid into behaving i guess everybody sees things differently some see this as abuse and others don't it's more like a form of mental intimidation you can say

It didn't phase me as a kid.
Kids don't think that much about it because they are too young to fully understand the whole concept.
I didn't even get the whole thing about God and the Bible until the last year and I was raised Christian.

No, child abuse is sparing the rod and spoiling the child. Because then he goes and spoils society...look around, back when 90% of Americans were church going members(40's, 50's early 60's), crime was far less. Then when secularism became chic, look at the steep downward spiral into what we have today...

I think one of the basic rights that every child should have is being able to live without worries. Specially without worries that could easily have been avoided.

"Teaching" kids about Hell is one of those things. Religion should be for adults, children have the right to play, laugh, live without fear.

I've never heard of any parent saying "Do your homework or you'll burn in hell!" Instead, when my 6 yr old nephew asks where his grandma went, saying heaven is a nice thought compared to her going absolutely nowhere.

Or we could make Athiests happy and fill their heads with ideas of people worshiping ramen noodles in place of God.
