I am a travel agent, and I can say truthfully that you will not need a passport. Photo id is useful - your driving licence will be fine. do NOT believe people who say you need a passport. Even the airlines flying to the Irish Republic only require valid photo id.

I took the ferry from Pembroke to Rosslaie(Irish Ferries) last week by car. They were not remotrly interested in my passport and never asked for it. All they wanted was the booking reference and the registration of the van. They didnt even look in the back of it.
I FAIRLY sure this is typical too as its EU to EU but why not look it up o the website of the carrier in their FAQ section

I went to Ireland by ferry in August and I did not have a passport either. You just need proof of identity.

You don't need a bloomin passport on a ferry for goodness sake!
you just turn up at the ferry port and away you go!
would be different if you were flying though.

I don't think you need a passport to get from England to Ireland, do you? It's part of the European Union.

Technically, you do need a passport. It's not worth forking out for the journey if you dont have one.
