Primarily, you need to understand why the whole world was wanting to control the "Spice Trade".

That was the reason that the Spanish Expeditions were mounted and then the French and the Dutch and finally, the English.

Most of the Middle Eastern and Eastern Countries where the Winters are freezing cold, have little vegetation for three months in the year and vegetables are not their staple diet. Meat, tends to get rancid and needed to be preserved to last the winter and also during the height of summer when it was too hot for food to keep.

Pepper is one of the least used spices in India, where they have a plethora of vegetation and the large majority of the Hindus and Indians were vegetarians.

The Jews and later the Arabs discovered pepper which quicklly became a favorite spice and the West learnt of this from them.

Since the Indians hardly used it, this was the cheapest spice for the Jews and Arabs to buy from them and then resell at very profitable margins to the Westerners. Indigo, from India was the favorite dye, too; while the Indians, themselves used other vegetable dyes.

Pepper, silk and indigo became synonymous with Wealth and the Western Historians who visited India and returned built up the El Dorado myth of streets paved with gold and streets lined with diamonds and such fabulous tales.

The Spanish King and Queen were so fond of this this dream that they even funded the Adventurer Christopher Colombus who went and found America! He thought, however, that he'd found India and that's how the Native Americans got the Red Indian tag.

Meanwhile, India, being a sub-Continent, had had 64 Kingdoms, all of them being Hindu, where one was fighting the other. The Mongols and the Turks saw this Opportunity to take over this fertile and rich land and at first, the Turks took over the Country by running over most of Northern India.

This was very easy, because they first came over as mercenaries working for a Hindu king and slowly building up their ranks importing more and more of the Ottoman Empires soldiers who were waiting for their turn to go there with the blessing of the Ottoman Emperor. When they'd defeated most of this Kings' enemies and literally united the whole of Northern India, they killed the Hindu King and established the Turkish Ottoman Empires rule there.

The Mongols were most upset with their having missed the Opportunity, since they had also tried a similar strategy, but on the wrong side, which had lost. So, Genghis Khan decided to invede India and he and Tamerlane switched their direction from the West to the South East and invaded India. A long bloody series of Wars, finally culminated in the establishing of the Mongol rule in India, where their descendants mixed with the local women and their offsprings came to be known as the Moghuls who were the last Rulers of India before the British.

Now, the Spanish, the Portugese, the Dutch, the French and finally, the British established bases in India, coming in as Traders, buying up pepper, silk and indigo; while they slowly built up their Armies. Establishing bases in Bombay and Calcutta, they aligned themselves with the Nawab of Audh and then fought and created a Treaty with the decadent Mughal Emperor. Now, they quickly built up a huge Mercenary Army and established the British Raj, where they offered the people the new Concept of Parliamentary Democracy, with the Queen of England as the Emperess of India.

It was, actually, with these diplomatic successes that the British established the Pax Britannica in India and actually, united all the 64 Kingdoms and created the Country which did not exist, before. Their success was, in fact that they managed to get the Indians to see them as their Saviors and fighting against "thughee" and "sati" and other barbaric practices which the Educated Hindus wanted quelled.

Being Christians, they diplomatically mediated between the Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs. The Sikhs are traditional Enemies of the Muslims and the Hindus support the Sikhs. This is where the British excelled.

The Spaniards, Portugese, French and Dutch were reduced, slowly but steadily to holding very tiny colonies in India; some so small that they were all just a few islands.

Building the New india, the British built the Civil Service, the Railways, the Universities and even the Social Clubs of India. And the Armed forces and Police.

India did not fall to the British, it just slowly gave over all it's Administration to them. Did you know that the actual British in the British Raj's Administration were as little as 1%? They just held the top posts!? All the rest were actually Indians, themselves.

The greater number of the British were the Missionaries who built the Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Old Age homes and so on.

That's why they were so popular there; despite some very bad incidents happening with some misguided Brits who caused incidents that lead to revolts. England always acted swiftly in containing this kind of damage, because they were very much aware that they couldn't afford bad Press!

Had it not been for an England Trained Mahatma Gandhi, they would have still been ruling India. Gandhi used all his Knowledge, ironically, gained from the British, themselves, to defeat them. For those who don't know this, the "half naked fakir" was a very well educated Advocate and Barrister, in reality.

Surprising as it might seem to to many, the British did not "invade" India, because they didn't need to. It was handed over on a silver platter to them because they became the trusted mediators!?

The Crown Jewels of the Queen of England were, actually, gifted to her by the Last Mughal Empreror who died issueless and the Empire was given, quite literally, to the Brits!? The Queen, in fact endeared herself to the Indians by calling India the Jewel in the Crown!?!?

Even today, their ties are so strong that the Laws of England effect the Laws of India. VAT came into England, and it's now in India and there are... oh so many precedents to it. The Queen of England is still a very revered peoson there.

Hope this helped.

Merry Christmas!!!!

"ILUVYU" Idon't, You were 16 when Korea's cease-fire went into effect, by the way.

As for the asker, you seem obsessed with the growth of the British Empire. I checked some of your other Q&As and I assume you are a very young child.
India was invaded for the same reason, the US is currently invading Iraq. GREED, MONEY, POWER.

Country has many natural resources, so it was valuable to the British. Also, the people lived tribally, making it easy for the highly organized british military to subdue it.
