Yes its real but as should be obvious from the ad to do all those things it has to be radio controlled or given very specific instructions. 'walk up the stairs' is insufficient - he'll need to be told how wide they are, how high etc - funny I'm calling it him.

It is somehow moving when he waves at the astronaut. We've come a long way. Despite the steady advances in robotics (the very field owes its name to Asimov) artificial intelligence has ground to a halt.

Definitely real. Although the robot is programmed to do certain things, for instance when four of them were moving in harmony and performing the exact same moves, it's possible the programming could also include the task of climbing stairs. If you were told to climb stairs, you would know from previous experience what to do. If the robot is 'told' to climb, he would need some sort of rudimentary instruction as to what to expect after he raises one foot and moves it forward, then lowers it until resistance is felt. At that time, his instruction would be to perhaps lean forward for balance, exert pressure on that leg to raise himself and bring the other leg up to the appropriate level. Since most stairs are of an approximate height, the robot would only need instructions to start at the maximum height for any set. Of course, trying to have him go downstairs would be a greater challenge, as he would keep trying to lower himself to a stair that might not even be there. Sensors in various parts of his body could help him 'see' where the stairs were and how much movement he would have to make.

It's a real robot, and have very advanced features that allow it to mimic human movements - it has a sense of balance, for example. But it is no where near as 'artificially intelligent' as the TV ad implies! A lot of those scenes were obviously set up and pre-programmed, to create the illusion that it was genuinely exploring a museum on it's own and exhibiting curiosity. We're not there yet!

I think it is, but I wonder whether it can go back down stairs? I would have thought that it's much harder to balance going down that going up.
