I recently adopted a dog from the humane society. The first time I opened the door to put him outside he slipped past me and ran as fast and far as he could.
My older dog who recently passed away never did this.
Please advise.

First, congratulations on giving a shelter dog a "forever home"! Only a truly caring person does that!

My boy will run, too - so he's never allowed out alone. I've run after him, calling his name - and when he spots me, I run toward home, again calling his name, and he chases me home!

He now has a trainer, and the last time he slipped his collar and began to take off, she told him to stay and he did! He just needed to get to know both of us - and now he'll do whatever we say. Your dog just needs the same time to get to know you and your wants.

Attach a long line to the live ring or the choker on the dogs neck. A word here about chokers, I consider the usual kind cruel and have not used them in over 20 years. I used a prong collar and it works much better for the dog. And before anyone gets upset put a prong collar on one thigh and a regular choker on the other and give yourself a GODD correction. You will be feeling the choker correction for a few days, I promise. Now back to the lesson at hand. Hold one end of the long line in your hand and open the door for the dog to see. As soon as he runs for it, you go the other way holding the line. You will hear and see the results from his actions. Reel him in and do it again. If he is stupid he will try it. It only takes 2-3 times for a dog to understand that he should not do this. The next time you offer him the opportunity to run, he might sit there and look at you, which is exactly what you want him to do, LOOK AT YOU. You can do this as often as you need to and there is a follow up that will ensure your dog will NEVER run away from you again. Now, for all the bleeding hearts out there, YOU DID NOT MAKE THE DOG DO ANYTHING TO CAUSE HIM PAIN. HE DID THIS ON HIS OWN, HE MADE A MISTAKE, AND HE WAS ALLOWED TO LEARN FROM IT. just all of us are supposed to. And if you still cannot satisfy your selves with the above statement, think of scraping the dog off the street when he WILL get hit by a car. And NO, you cannot sugarcoat the actions needed to be taken to save a dog's life and try it another way. He needs to have it put inhis head in such a way that he will never try it again.

when I followed my first gray the settlement I signed between different issues under no circumstances off lead I were given interior the habit they run in my fenced backyard & so does my Lab and we walk on lead, sooo many canines that "have under no circumstances left my sources beforehand" finally end up interior the midst of the line hit with the help of a motor vehicle, even a nicely experienced canines, if some thing runs in the front of them or they see yet another canines or they get scared or capture a fragrance, they run, their canines, little ones do the same element, even older ones, can we anticipate our canines to be smarter than we are, and under no circumstances some thing works like an excellent previous shaped fence, invisible fences ar no good for fragrance hounds, Lab, beagles, rertreviers and many different or the sight hounds, at the same time as they bypass they experience or listen not some thing yet instinct calling

Well, of course he ran - the dog doesn't even know you. Since you say you had a dog before, surely you know they have to be trained before you can blithely open a door and expect a dog to just sit there. Get someone to teach you how to train a dog before you scrape this up of the road!

my dog does/did that too. I trained him to stay in the yard first on the leash and slowly allowed him to come off, when I was there with him. If he does run away, he always comes back but i find calling "cookie!" or "dinner!" works, because he wants food.

You don't say what type of dog it is.
But the dog may need exercise and to learn that not running is a good thing.
