My dog always does, she's almost human. They say smart dogs look you right in the eye and I agree.

Unlike in humans, who generally take eye contact as a sign of respect and sincerity, dogs tend to view direct, prolonged eye contact as a threat and/or challenge. While you would be unlikely to have this issue with a puppy, you should never look a strange dog in the eye, because they may feel threatened and attack and seriously injure you.

My dog looks me in the eye sometimes. She's really submissive, though, so I definitely don't think she is trying to be an alpha dog. More importantly, she definitely *doesn't* look me in the eye when she feels guilty about something. For instance, she chewed up the corner of one of my books and I ask her "Shadow, did you do that?" while pointing at the book and she can never look me in the eye if she did it. For me, it's a good method to see if she has done something bad.

To a dog direct continual eye contact is a sign of aggression. Your dog knows you are the Alpha and doesn't want to display a challenge.

Mine does. But some dogs don't like to look you in the eye because it's like you're challenging them. So they'll bark at you, and sometimes bite you. I stared at a dog when I was small, and it stared at me and then it tried to bite me. I think it's just a challenge. Most dogs are ok with you looking them in the eye. My dog just kisses me when I do.

Mine does.. he does it when he is listening to me talk to him or if he wants attention. Some dogs who dont are just either hyper and know they have done something wrong or they dont trust humans. It has a lot to do with trust, just as humans. we look into each others eyes when we talk to each other except when lying.. Dogs are the same.. they look you in the eyes when there is trust...

My dogs (3) look us in the eye. If a dog doesn't it could be because they are scared or nervous.

They do look you in the eye! They just don't stare back because, in the animal kindom, it's a sign of aggression (and their mamas told them it was rude when they were puppies). If a dog looks at you straight in the eye and fixes his gaze, you better run because you are fixin' to get bitten.

I am definitely no expert on this but I believe it is something to do with leadership. If they see you as the leader they won't look you in the eye as that to a dog is challenging authority.

you're dog dosen't because he/she knows that you are the boss- and they won't look you in the eye because they know you are in a sense more powerful. ***but--** NEVER look into the eyes of a dog you've never met before. especially a stray. they look that on as a challenge to fight and you'll be running down the street with a god nipping at your feet before you know it.
