I think you need to find out a lot more before you get a dog, they are a life long committiment!;

I think you need to do some research before you acquire a dog.

Springer Spaniels are a very energetic, active breed and so need a lot of physical and mental exercise. Many end up in rescue centres as their owners can't cope with them. They make excellent sniffer dogs as they are so keen and will work their socks off. They don't just lie around the house looking cute.

Some Cocker Spaniels still suffer from so-called Rage Syndrome although responsible breeders are trying to eradicate the condition.

The lovely little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a number of serious hereditary problems which can be heart-breaking for unsuspecting owners.

There are numerous other Spaniels -the Clumber, Welsh Springer, Field Spaniel etc. etc.

You need to think carefully about what you really want - big brown soulful eyes and long ears isn't enough.

Make your mind up what you want, Choose your breeder carefully, see the mother and find out about the father, inspect other closely related dogs.

Be wary of puppy farms - they exist in built up areas!! They aren't just out in the country. Read up on the breed you choose. Read up about rearing and training puppies, find out about puppy socialisation and training classes, teach your children how to behave around your dog. Don't rush into it - they all look cute and it is easy for your heart to rule your head.

Consider a rescue - try the breed rescue but be careful the dog may come with problems.

A Dog is for Life - not just for Christmas!

DO NOT BUY OVER THE NET.

I hate to burst the bubble like this but Christmas is not the best time to house break a puppy, let alone a spaniel.
There is that lovely portrait of a young girl with her red haired spaniel beside her by a lake side, and it looks so idyllic.

Spaniels(American cocker, English cocker, English Springer, Welsh Springer,King Charles, Clumber, American water, Brittany , Field spaniel, irish water, Sussex) are lovely dogs that are difficult to toilet train in the beginning so you have to be patient.

There are several spaniel rescue homes for these babies whose owners gave up on them. If you are prepared for working on them, they are gorgeous intelligent dogs who will love you for the rest of their lives.

You are just the sort of person who should NOT get a dog of any kind. You have obviously done no research into the psaniel breeds at all and are basing your choice merely on how a dog looks. Springers are large very active working dogs which need proper training. Most spaniels are working dogs and all need good training and a helluva lot of excersize. They can become temperamental and aggressive if not trained and given enough excersize.

pets are NOT for Christmas.. typically you will find lower quality pups available now.. because they were only bred by people wanting to make a quick Christmas sale.. a REPUTABLE breeder would NEVER NEVER bred pups for Christmas...
Reputable breeders breed for the betterment of the breed...
all others breed for profit with no regard to genetics, mental health, or physicall condition.. and dont much care who they sell to.

Make your own wishes come true - save up your money and start looking for a breeder now... so that in the spring (which is really the better time to get pups) you will be ready...

NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store

on occassion SPCA, or humane shelter will have Spaniels.. or contact a Spaniel rescue

if your kids are young you need to know SPANIELS ARE NOT GOOD WITH KIDS..
especially cockers.. which are known to have a strong dislike for kids and are NOT the dogs as portrayed in Disney films...

*** ADDITIONAL INFO***
sad eyes and long ears are NOT good reasons for picking a breed...
the long ears are prone to infection
TEMPERMENT and INTELLIGENCE LEVEL in a breed should be your #1 and #2 concerns.. looks are one of the last things to consider...

spaniel's are hard work i have 3 ranging from 4 to 12 mine are working dogs but the breed needs stimulation and good training they do not go around things but through things even bushes and water ways there nose is always to the ground foraging you will be forever cleaning your home if they live indoors with you always grooming them to remove debris from there coat I would think long and hard about a spaniel if you do not have a lot of time to devote to them

Why dont you contact a rescue home, they have plenty of dogs wanting homes, probably have spaniels too ( though you dont state what type of spaniel) I got my 2 German Shepherds from a rescue.
