It sounds more like diabetes. Cats do get diabetes and if not treated quickly, can die from it.

It does sound like hyperthyroidism. They usually eat a lot but lose weight and they drink a lot as with diabetes. The two conditions CAN go together though. Blood work will show any problems. The thyroid condition is very easily treated with a fairly cheap medication.

Ususally diabetic cats are NOT underweight!! People see drinking a lot and think diabetes!!!!! Hyperthyroidism is WAY more common!!!!!! Of cats over 12...almost half will becom hyperthyroid!!

Mny diabetic cats live pretty long...it is however harder to regulate a cat than a dog. Dogs do better as a diabetic than cats. I have had a cat that was both diabetic and hyperthyroid. He was a Siamese and live 5 years with both conditions. Died at 19.

HyperT is pretty common in cats. Fortunately it's easily treatable, because if left untreated it will cause lethal heart damage.

Medication, surgery and radioactive iodine are all effective in treating hyperT, and the first two aren't even expensive.

As for diabetes, a recent study has shown that most cases of feline diabetes can be controlled with diet, without insulin. For the others, insulin works just as well for cats as it does for humans.
