Obviously it is salt. The reason for both is unsalted allows more control of the total amount of salt in baking or cooking (unsalted butter is generally used). For slathering on foods such as bread, pancakes, etc. salted enhances the sweet cream flavor of the butter (salted).
So; Unsalted for baking/cooking and Salted for table/serving.

The only difference is one has salt and the other doesn't. Unsalted butter is preferred generally when baking because a lot of recipes will already add salt or it wont be needed. Salted butter is great when it is a stand up ingredient for instance toast with butter... the taste is a lot more satisfying in my opinion with salted butter.

Unsalted butter is used often in baking. I only buy & use it I can always add salt.
Plus I actually like the flavor better on my muffins & toast.

One has salt the other doesn't...Usually the unsalted is used in baking.....but there is not difference in how they melt, bind, etc...

~~~~ummm,,,,hmmmm lets see,,,, salted butter would have salt in it. and ummm,, unsalted butter would contain "no" salt. Hope that helped,,,,,,
