I think that one way or the other you do need to tell her.
I am saying this because, for example when I saw some of the people who auditionned for Pop Idol, I thought to myself: Do they have no "friends" or family to tell them honestly how they sound?
So, a friend is not necessarily a messenger with only good news.
It's someone who truly cares.
Maybe try it at a moment when she's relax;
Or just after she's been particularly bad to make your point.
Whichever, the sooner, the better.
It will most probably hurt, and possibly she won't speak to you for a while; But if she does think of you as a friend, she will come back, because you've been honest with her.

You don't give her enough attention? Does she think this and tell you, or is it something you've decided upon for yourself?

Personally, I'd drop her from my Christmas card list and break contact. Friends with attitude and high expectations you can probably do without.

Face the subject straight and fair - tell her to P*** off out of your sight and your life and that you think that she is a F****** Ugly old hag and her feet stink 'amongst other things higher up' and then 'DUCK' for your own safety.
Happy Christmas and good luck.

if she is a friend she will not be offended if you just say her attitude is untenable but why is she so upset if she thinks your not giving her enough attention do we have to read something into that?

Be Open and Honest with her!
Calmly sit her down and take a deep breath-then say your peace!

If she's a friend you should be able to tell her - politely. If she takes offence she will come out of it. True friends should always be able to be honest with each other.
