"It rained last night" is the correct way to say this. Past tense of rain is rained. since the time in which the event has passed, you use the past tense of a word. The others that suggested "it was raining last night" are incorrect.

No, it either needs to be in the past progressive, like It was raining, or the past tense It rained last night. It's implies present.

It's not correct. That would mean "It is raining last night" and the tenses would conflict. The correct wording would be "It was raining last night" or "It rained last night."

I can't believe people can be so ignorant to even ASK this question. Do people in America really not know how to spell and write properly. Judging by these boards, I would say yes.

It is past tense. "It was raining last night."

it should be " It was raining last night." the word last night meant it happened in the past, so you use 'was' instead of 'is'. 'was raining' the verb conjugation is past progressive.

You can say "It is raining now" - present progressive
or you can can say "it was raining yesterday"
"It was raining last night"
but never "It is raining last night."

but why make it so complicated by using the progressive form of the verb. simply use the past tense "It rained last night." :-)
