My personal opinion is if you feel badly about it, you must be thinking too much of yourself and how you look to others. That misses the whole idea of giving. Don't think about yourself...give because you care and make it genuine, no matter what the cost, large or small. People will know it's real and your mind should be at rest. Possibly the other person gave a more expensive one because they themselves want to look good? Think about it, as long as you aren't being "cheap" just to be cheap...give what you can and know a true friend will look past any cost.

I sometimes do. But the truth to the matter is, there are things that are more important than the monetary value of a gift. I would much rather, for instance, receive a box containing gourmet chocolates than a box containing a diamond ring. Even though the ring costs more, I enjoy the chocolates more- and so the chocolates have greater value to me. Bottom line? As long as the other party is happy with the gift you gave, I wouldn't worry.

No, because I put a lot if thought into each gift, so I know that what I've given is appreciated, regardless of cost. I'd rather have a 15$ gift that was truly hand picked for me than a 200$ gift that was clearly an afterthought.
Not that expensive gifts are usually an afterthought-just for argument's sake. lol

It is for sure the thought that counts. Prices will vary due to income and many other factors. I think its best if we are just grateful that someone remembers us enough to bring us a token of thier affection. Gratitude keeps one from becoming catty, or disapointed.

it's the thought and unless you discuss a price range- You pick a gift mostly because you feel it suits the person you bought it for and the one receiving should love you for it

You need to be heartless in such a situation or you will find yourself spending way too much.
