Yes, the dog can be "cured." You will need to establish "alpha" status with this dog and then begin retraining. But I would recommend getting professional help from a professional dog trainer. You or a family member could be seriously hurt (depending on the kind of dog).

possible to stop this dog from attacking people yes.
being sure that it would not attack people based on its history no.
it is nessasary for a person that has a dog to be the alpha dog that is the top dog . that is the dog that none of the other dogs attempt to fight with because it has proven its strength. Most people get themselfs to this point in the pack ie you and the dog when its a puppy by way of basic training or just basic care for the dog.
sending your dog to a trainer is not the answer that is for sure.
you and the dog going to classes that are arranged so its you the dog and the teacher there only is the way to go.
the best way to find a teacher is to contact the american kennel club or canadain kennel club or whatever country your in that kennel club. club is not really what they are it is really a very
professional place where paid person's keep records of the lineage of a breed and of an indivual dog. they dont train dogs
they do over see shows for dogs and as a result they know who the top trainers teachers are.
in the mean time you have to put a proper fitting muzzle on your dog and be sure to have that on any time there is any chance your dog is going to be around anyone other then you .
the fact that you have written this question and stated you know your dog can be dangerous has set you in a postion with the law that should your dog harm someone at your home or any place leaves you almost totaly without defence in court.
the same goes for all the people that put up beware of dog signs
seems stupid but by doing that the person has put up a sign saying pretty much i have a dog that i know is danergous and i can not control i have failed to meet basic common sense saftey requirements for my home and property.
this is the same as some one putting up traps on there property
say leg hold bear traps on the lawn and things doing that is not just stupid but its agaist the law the same law that applies to having knowledge that your dog is a danger to people.
i hope you do manage to keep the dog and keep the dog from ever harming you or anyone else . be carefull .

The dog sounds like Jekyll and Hyde, how do you trust him? How do you know when he will act out his aggressive tendencies? No, a trainer cannot help you, and if he tells you he is, he is lying. The dog has genetic problems that surface whenever, I am not sure because you never told us, other then food. If he is threatening you now, and I do not know how old he is or what kind of dog he is, what makes you think he will not carry out a full blown attack when he matures or when he feels pressured? I know the type of dog you describe, weak nerved and a fear biter. What you do with him is up to you, so long as you are willing to live with the responsibility and the fact that he will one day explode and take someone with him. That is another reason why I am against adopting an animal from the pound.

If this were my dog, I would have it euthanized. I'm sorry, but there are too many dogs in rescue with wonderful temperaments dying for lack of a home, and too many agressive dogs that could really hurt someone in homes right now. I don't feel this is a safe dog to have in an average dog owner's hands. About the only suggestion I have is to see if a K9 school will accept him as a police dog.

Oh gosh, that sounds like a risky situation. Food and People aggression are the 2 things that you really don't want your pet to exhibit. I would speak to my vet first to see what they suggest.
I think it would also depend on the size and breed of your dog. Of course a larger dog would pose bigger problems and you would be best off to seek a trainer for him.
Good Luck!! I know it's probably hard for you to be torn about this, but you are a good owner for at least trying to resolve the situation,.

It depends on what breed as to the aggression, as different breeds have different triggers. Have you had him from a puppy or is he a rescue dog? Also some breeds have male dominance issues and if your not going to breed from him its worth having him neutered. You need to find a good trainer that will work with the cause, and show you how to control the aggression. Sadly, even the most docile of dogs can demonstrate aggression, it is part of their nature, it's finding a way to channel it and make it positive.

Here are a few books to check out:
http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB740
http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB594
http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=DTB825
The first 2 are pretty short. The 3rd is longer and is really specific about what to do, and the author has made the book easy to read and to use. It's great that you're trying to solve the problem, and also managing the dog by controlling it. I would highly recommend looking at the APDT's website to find a trainer near you.

He likely can be helped, but you need some professional help here. His behaviour will escalate and the time will come when he won't back down from you. You need to find a qualified trainer if you want to keep this dog, because he will get worse.

My daughter is a dog lover, and she has a wonderful dog named Ruffalo, but he is not a ruff housing dog, he is a sweet dog. She says, get a correction/shock collar, with a remote. Put it on him (your dog) and give him a correction/jolt every time he shows aggression.
If you love the dog its worth a try. Ruffalo used to bark all the time, now he is no longer a barker.

Call your local humane society and ask them for a trainer. It is very important that your dog knows the chain of command. You are in charge all the time always.
