Like ... if you give gifts to kids and maybe they will start liking you just because you always buy things for them. Or you buy things for your aunts / relatives / mom ... and they might not really appreciate it ... or maybe the gift is not that expensive e.g. the necklace is not really sterling silver and might make you itch .. but I guess jewellery will make people happy anytime ...

A gift should be given with no expectations or implications. It shouldn't matter how the person receiving the gifts takes it.

This is an age old problem. I have wrestled with it for years thinking I had to give people gifts. As a result of extensive travel in the former Soviet Union and other third world countries, I have changed my idea of giving. Our culture has an emphasis on material things while other countries value relationships. I have found real joy in spending time with people over a simple cup of tea and cookies, an afternoon together or a shared meal. My family has almost completely cut out the gift giving. It got way out of hand and now we focus more on relationships and spending time with people. I hope this helps you get a different perspective on gift giving. Most gifts we give to our families are not needed and simply indulgent in our materialistic world. I pray you find the joy of spending time with those you love as a more perfect gift. Merry Christmas!

I think gifts are a very small part of social interaction. To me, sometimes the best gift can be a hug. They are usually a lot more meaningful than gifts anyway.

Gifts are good to reassure people that you do care about them. But like you said, the value of the gift may inadvertedly mark the value of the relationship. And too many gifts may make the recipient feel like you are trying to buy their love, and gifts will become inneffective.

There are alot more meaningful gifts than gifts.

I disagree about jewlery being a hit every time I would prefer a gift that say the person really knows me
i feel the same about flowers- Like a prefer honeysuckle over roses for valentine's for instance
Gifts have become a bit of a chore, sadly

Giving gifts is a way to let the receiver know you care. But you don't have to worry so much about it! I guess it depends on the person's personality really. Once, someone I knew said something about if someone gives a 30 dollar gift, then it's really tacky and cheap. I can't afford to buy 50 dollar gifts for everyone so I never gave her a gift because I knew she wouldn't appreciate it. One of my friends REALLY likes socks, so one year I gave ger a pair of socks for her Birthday! It was a really really small gift but she appreciated it a lot and thanked me. =)

I think it depends on their personality and how they were raised. some get so much they expect more, while those that never really got a whole lot are happy with what they do get. as a person matures, they are happy with less.

that is depend to their personality, some people may take it for granted and some people really appreciative
once you recognize which are which, next time you buy them present don't bother yourself too much.. you know what to expect by then :))

but it is good for being sincere and giving :))

they take it for granted....as if being greedy at their birthday, national holiday sales wasn't enough. it's like you have your wallet open and they tell you what THEY want spend to show their value as a person. commercials also keep telling you to buy their products because you need it. 'tis the season to be greedy.
