Go for the Volvo. More room, reliable (300k average lifespan), good power (5cylTurbo: 225hp+), and you won't spend anywhere near $20k on it.
I have a friend who raises boxers and loves his Volvo wagon. They have a plastic liner and cage-like grill option that separates the back area from the seats. Very nice setup.

Driving a volvo is about as exciting as an afternoon nap. Go with Audi or Mercedes. Both are fun to drive and very nice quality.

I will drop the Benz unless there are certain brand value for Merc in your country. I personally think the 2002/3 Volve Wagon on a 18" rims is a straight out killer. Safety is always an association with Volvo, so you know you are in good metal. Audi would be next in the preferred list, becos of drivability. It is more agile, a tad quicker for same engine size I think.
Ultimately, the choose is yours (another one is BMW 3 series 2002 wagon .. very sporty)
Have Fun .. Cheers!

You might get a Volvo in your price range but a V6 isn't available. Personally I wouldn't have any Volvo later than the mid-90s 940 series. As for Mercedes and Audi, these cars seem to be as trouble-prone, maybe moreso, than Volvos. After 33 years of Volvo ownership I went toToyota and have been very happy since. I do still have a Volvo but it certainly isn't a newer one.

Good luck getting any of those cars in decent condition for $21K or less. The Volvo would probably last the longest, but the Audi is probably more powerful and the biggest of the three. Cross the Mercedes off your list!

You should look at Ford or Chevy. I wouldn't ever get a Mercedes, Audi, or a Volvo. I probably think this way because of the part of the country I live in though!!! Good luck anyway!

The Volvo would have the most room in the back, the Benz would be the most reliable, and the Audi would be the funnest to drive. You did say you wanted what would last I would go with the Benz, they seem to be quieter inside too.

mercedes is only a shadow of it's former self [overly complex and only fair in reliability, drive train is soild]
audi poor quality throughout and no resale value [same as v.w.],and ridicules to work on
volvo 850/v70 series are lasting but transmission fluid changes at 30k intervals max seem to be the norm and if t-belt is due replace all components [water pump, gas grenade, tensioner/idler pullies]

get the volvo because ford makes them and they last the longest and if they break down the parts are easy to replace because its made in the country that you drive it

Dude lemme tell you something
Mercedes: Slow pick up
Audi: unnatural car design
Volvo: Out of all these, If you're really desperate you should take this one.
Other than that, go for Honda or Ford. Or the good old Malaysian Proton Wira! Hehe
