Of course. Its also the result of human selfishness. Put the two together and you get violence if someone can't learn to control their own behavior. Some people need religion to control their behavior because they're incapable of learning for themselves how they should behave. Other people dont because they realize that the world is just a nicer place if we don't act on every instinct we have.

The #1 individually violent crime in the world is rape, which is about power. It out numbers murder. It out numbers armed robbery. It out number common assault.
