I understand that if you don't have luggage to check, printing the BP before going to airport allows the traveler to skip the check-in lines and go directly to security with carry-on items.

But when you DO have luggage that needs to be checked, you still have to stand in the check-in line to get the luggage checked and tagged. So what is the advantage? Does arriving at the airport with a boarding pass reduce the chances that you will be bumped?

I ask this because I'm flying tomorrow from ORD and could print my pass at home today if it would help.

Checking in online greatly reduces your chances of being bumped because you have a confirmed seat assignment and a boarding pass. If you want to skip the bag check line at the ticket counter, step outside and take advantage of curbside service. The lines are usually shorter and move a lot faster.

Depending on the airline, you may be able to go into a special line and you show them your boarding pass and then they take your luggage and send it to the aircraft. Only some airlines do this and you have to call and check, I fly out of Pearson International Airport (Toronto, Ontario) with Air Canada and they usually (depends on Terminal) have a separate line where you show your boarding pass, ID, then you go to security!

Good question. Often I just don't check-in at home when I have baggage to check. I do check-in at home (even if I don't have a printer) if I want to switch to a good seat, or if I know I might arrive at the airport kinda late, or like you said, might get bumped on an overbooked flight.
