I just read this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/6205403.stm on the BBC that says it rude to say it France. I have friend from Quebec who says it before every meal. Is a Quebec thing and not a French thing or what?

yes. it's a french expression we say before eating. it's not rude at all. In fact, it's rude NOT to say it.

Do American's say "have a good day"?
I heard it was rude to say "Happy Holidays" by some guy selling t-shirts for $18 a pop, to show how brave you are to say "Merry Christmas".
To each his own.

I always say "bon appetit" before eating when I am with people that I don't know well or even with friends.
It's better to say it. And if someone says "bon appetit" you have to reply by saying it too.

I think it is used mostly when you order something like a "royale with cheese" and the waiter says it in France.

Tres bien...depend on who you ask...every local says they are right...like English of British and English of American....they were came from the same source but now the local where you ask is always say they are correct English....it's so funny.

It is very common in France.
No, it is even impolite if you DON’T say it!
It means: enjoy your meal!

It is completely wrong if anyone says it is not a French thing or even rude!

You are welcome!
