Agreed, some people have stupid tattoos and it loks crap, they have it for the wrong reasons, they have a tramp stamp of the playboy bunny on their boob. But the majority of people have meaningful tattoos, things that mean alot to them. Why do people tar everyone with body art with the same brush? Someone could really expressing themselves, or remembering a passed love one in their body art and some ignorant **** comes along and treats them like a dumb cheap person. That's not right.

Tattooing is hundereds of thousands of years old, whole communites and religions have been based around tattooing. I know this because I've done a Bachelor of Arts degree on this and got a first. I have alot of body art so there's also proving that highly educated, on the ball people can have ink for all the right reasons.

If someone made a statement about a whole race of people based on a few individuals, that wouldn't be right, so why should this be? If it's not for you, ok, just don't judge, agreed?

Unfortunately, in our society, many people judge others based upon preconceived notions and stereotypes. In the past, individuals with tattoos were associated with negative images and stereotypes, and changing everyone's beliefs/opinions is a difficult thing to do. So although tattoos are becoming more "mainstream" and common, there are still alot of people out there who look down on people with tattoos as, like you say, trailer trash, tramps, criminals, etc. These close-minded people feel very righteous in their beliefs, and it's hard to convince them to see things differently. Personally, I find it sadly funny and annoying at the same time that these people get so hot under the collar about issues that have absolutely no effect on their lives whatsoever. This is a free society, though, and everyone is allowed to think and believe whatever they want; it is just unfortunate that some feel they need to impose their personal standards on everyone else as well. On the bright side, I find that people who are proud to have their tattoos are independent, confident people who are not bothered by what others may think of their tattoos. After all, they didn't get them for other people, but for themselves.

I agree it's not right! A friend of mine is a professinal tattoo artist and she has many but wheter or not you think someone tattoo is stupid they had it put on there body for a reason. I have a fairy on the back of my left calf. People assume it is stupid but I got it and it represents the relationship that I have with my daughter. You never know what someone is thinking or going through. I also agree with you that some people get them that have no meanig at all. That doesn't make the tattoo stupid. That makes the person stupid because they will regret it in later years knowing that it doesn't mead anything.

well its quite obviously ignorance. And probably old people- or am i tarring all old people with the same brush? haha!
The younger generation seems to be fine about body art tho and thats a positive thing. im 18 and dont really feel that tattoos are for me (yet) but i still appreciate that a lot of time and effort goes into them and they can look amazing- like works of art.

Although i still have to ask, why do people with tattoos winge about how they are stereotyped? if u get a tattoo u should be prepared for those ignorant ****'s!

It's not right to judge anyone. A person who has a tattoo or even many tattoo's does so because of their own likes an dislikes. I happen to work with many people who have tattoos and a great deal of piercings, ( I, however, do not), and they each had very different reasons for each one of them. They did not do it to get attention or for the shock factor of other people and are actually among the more intelligent and sensitive people I know. Most of them, as you stated in your question, are interested in the history and art aspect of them. Just remember, you can't judge a book by it's cover.

I do not agree with judging people. I have a "tramp stamp". I got it there because in the corporate world I don't want to be judged by the art I have on my body or the piercings that I have. To call a tattoo on the lower back a tramp stamp is demeaning to people who have them. Mine is in a spiritual context and if someone doesn't like it well that is their problem!

It is unable to say that judging others is not right too. Everyone tends to get a general idea about somebody. Hence, a tattoo is just a sign. The matter of having a tattoo is what you want to deliver to other people. If your tattoo wants others look at you as a gangster, don't blame if they do so. However, it's just an initial signal. If someone does not see you right, just proves him wrong (in case of its worth doing).

I totally agree...it would be the same as making fun of people who don't have as nice of clothes as someone else, or can't afford the things that 'you' deam as 'cool'. Grow up people. Body art is a form of expression. You don't have to 'get it'. Just because you don't approve or find it attractive, doesn't give you the right to be rude or inappropriate. Tattoos and body modification go very far back in history by many, many different kinds of people...culturally, religiously, for many reasons. Ignorance must be bliss....

I think it depends on the tat really. Don't just jump to conclusions because you think one of their tats was stupid.

All my tats are meaningful to me for spiritual/religious/personal reasons. But I've also seen one girl with a "tramp stamp" (which is actually on the lower back) of a playboy bunny because she recognized that the body is a beautiful art form in itself while looking at the tasteful, yet nude bodies in Playboy.
I know another guy with a "gang tat" of the theater masks and two ribbons saying "Laugh now" and "Cry later". He got this because, regardless of gang relation, that is the philosophy he lives by; count your blessings and be happy rather than count your curses and live miserably.

I guess what I'm getting at is, make your call on the tat AFTER you ask the person with the mod why they got it and the meaning it holds for them.

Don't worry about what people think. Of course it's right to judge people, we do it all the time. I have a right to judge you about whatever I want. And you have the right to ignore me.

I love tattoos (don't have one yet, but thinking about what kind I want).

But yes, some people are stupid. There was a guy somewhere who got a tattoo - he wanted it to say "VILLIAN." He wrote down the word and told the tattoo guy to give it to him. Unfortunately, the dummy wrote down "VILLAIN." After he got it, the idiot went to a club or something to show it off - he got laughed out of the place for being stupid. LOL I love that story.

I used to be scared to see people with tattoos, because, way back home the only people who could have tattoos were people who went to jail. But that thought was all gone when I moved here in Canada, especially that I work in the beauty industry. I found it cute but also it depends on how many tattoos you are planning to put.
